Tricksters and Writers Vancouver Island North

November 08 2018

Applications for the Vancouver Island North program are now open.
The deadline to apply is December 5th (application details are outlined below).

This program offers Indigenous women the opportunity to develop a screenplay for a short or feature film or a web series. A jury of indigenous industry professionals will select 10 participants. Priority will be given to Indigenous women living in the area serviced by the Vancouver Island North Film Commission which encompasses Nanaimo to Cape Scott including the coastal mainland region of the Mount Waddington and Powell River Regional Districts.

The program will take place from January 2018 through to December 2019.
January 19th, 2019 - Workshop One
Location: The Vancouver Island Film Studios in Parksville

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Topics covered during this workshop include the three-act structure, character and plot development, and cultural authenticity. At the end of the day, writers should be prepared to work on their scripts and have a draft or a partial draft ready for Workshop Two.

April 20th, 2010 – Workshop Two (open to those who attended Workshop One)
Location: The Vancouver Island Film Studios in Parksville

Workshop Two will be a day of reading each other’s work and discussing particular and general challenges. A networking event will take place later in the day where guest potential funders and producers will be invited to meet the writers and to speak to the group about project development and production opportunities.

August 1st, 2019 – Writers will submit their “scripts in progress” to the program advisors. From these scripts, five will be selected for a session with a professional story editor.

Story editor consultations will take place in September and after a period of three months where writers can apply lessons learned, writers will meet with program advisors for a final consultation to discuss next steps. Consultations will likely take place over the phone or via a video meeting technology.

The program has been developed by WIFTV in collaboration with Doreen Manuel and Peggy Thompson. The Tricksters and Writers team also includes Jessie Anthony and Petie Chalifoux. To see team member bios and to learn more about Tricksters and Writers, click here:
